You’ve spoken about being quite shy. How are you handling all the media attention? Masi Oka: I am very grateful. This opportunity is like winning a once-in-a-life-time lottery. As much as I love meeting new people, I also need to be surrounded by friends who keep me grounded. Fortunately I have fantastic cast members. They’re like the brothers and sisters I never had. People like Milo [Ventimiglia], Greg [Grunberg], Adrian [Pasdar], Ali [Larter] and Hayden [Panettiere] are my mentors. Tell us three things about yourself that we probably don’t know. MO: It usually takes me three times to leave my house. The first time I leave I go, ‘Oh I forgot this.’ And then it’s, ‘Oh I forgot that too!’ And on it goes. I also get really obsessive about things, especially with books! I like to collect books. I don’t necessarily read them all, but if I read a bit I like, I’ll keep it! That’s one of my quirks. I read a lot of textbooks, like computer graphics and textbooks on programming. I like to learn new things. Why do you think Hiro has struck such a chord with fans? MO: I think everybody relates to different characters. I was fortunate to play a character that is different from everyone, in terms of speaking a foreign language and being so optimistic about his power. Everyone has a favorite, but I’m just happy my character relates to so many people. If you really could travel back in time, where would you go? MO:For selfish reasons I would go back to my sophomore year in college. Then I could tell myself ‘Do not ask that girl out! There’s 10 years of therapy right there!’ I would also love to go back in time to when things were discovered. Like when Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. Or any moment that’s in the history books. You have an IQ of 180. With that kind of score, shouldn’t you be doing something other than acting? MO: About my IQ, I think I get dumber by the hour. I am just very good at taking tests and I just guess very well. What’s the most unusual gift you have received from fans? MO: I do receive a lot of marriage proposals! Everyone makes a big deal about the fact that an Asian actor is starring in a major TV series. Why haven’t we seen more? MO:It’s difficult to have an Asian character on American TV. I was actually about to give up (acting) and start producing and writing so I could create more roles for Asian actors. I was very lucky to have stumbled onto Heroes. But things are changing. I consider it visual imprinting: the more you see (Asian characters), the more people will get use to it. Lost definitely took a bold step and opened some doors! After that there was Sandra Oh from Grey’s Anatomy, and now you have me and Sendhil on the forefront! It’s definitely a good thing! Source |

When the Heroes stars embarked on their world tour a few months ago, Galaxie hightailed down to Singapore for a chance to talk to part of the cast of the hit TV show (Season Two is currently airing on Star World). “I think the hardest transition for me (was) being in the public eye all the time and being recognised,” a genial Masi Oka revealed to Galaxie when he was asked about switching from visual effects work to acting. “I’ve been doing both special effects and acting when I came out of college, and I love balancing the two – using both the left and right side of the brain in harmony.” |
